Munchie Adventure: Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot 小肥羊火鍋, Burnaby

Annnnd this little fattie is back! To more AYCE hot pot I mean =P I don't think this is any good for me, but it was to celebrate my brother getting a job (and a better excuse than just wanting to try this place)!!! *clap clap* It wasn't very full when we got there, but there were quite a few people waiting by the middle of our meal, even though it was a Monday!!

Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot has locations worldwide-- I've been to the one in Hong Kong before! Feels great that there's one so close to home (a bit closer than the Richmond location anyways =P). They just opened a week or so ago, and the grand opening was October 26 I believe. Anyways, we were greeted by the hostess, and she told us to wait-- even though it looked pretty empty inside, I guess there's lots of reservations?

While deciding what to order, we noticed that in the meat column, it says limit two per order... so we thought ok, since we can order more than once, why not. Turns out it was two per order per person! haha, goofed up, and ended up ordering three rounds of food instead of the two that are on the first sheet =P I like how they listed how much of everything there is per order-- if only they followed that. A lot of the items did NOT end up to the ordered amount. I got way too much squid, and too few balls, etc.

Here's what came first (and I read of a similar situation happen to someone else, when I read the reviews for it online): FOOD. We didn't have our soup yet!! *sadface* We stared at the lamb and other stuff, wishing our soup would arrive faster. . . Veggies were clean and tender! Yum! Usually they give you crappy old veggies, but these were good! Lamb slices were nice and thin too! =D

Our soup finally arrived, we ordered the Tasty Cod Head Broth ($9.99), there was fish head, goji berries, scallion, and ginger in it. I dunno about ginger and hot pot-- just doesn't work out that way! Should be pears or smth =P But anyways... We fished out the fish heads first, didn't want anyone choking on any bones!

Ah, there's also a self-serve sauce area, but I found the broth was already too salty, so didn't use much sauce. Look at how nice the lamb is-- all that fat =P

I forgot what the beef in the background was called, but it was really good. It's the only beef option that isn't fatty beef or garlic beef (which is the dish I'm holding). It was nicely marbled and so tender!! Garlic beef was VERY GARLIC-Y. Not something I ordered again.

Pig skin was also very chewy and good. Health-wise? I don't know =P Look at how many squid there were! =( Fish was nothing special, your typical sole.

I was so excited to see quail eggs, cuz I've been craving them for a long time *happy girl* And they have fish, squid, beef tendon, lamb and shrimp balls. Lamb and beef were indistinguishable. Shrimp balls were pretty good! Lamb dumplings!! Now these, were good, I really loved the rich lamb taste in them. Skin was chewy, but that really depends on how you cook them, if you cook them just right, they're chewy =D The fish shiu mai were chewy too, and the beef tendon was enjoyed by my parents very much. Imitation crab fell apart once it hit the pot, not a good idea =P Beef omasum was better than tripe.

Overall it was an enjoyable meal, except for when it got busy, then we didn't get much service at all. It was so hard to find someone to refill our pot with more broth, and our teapot was empty for most of the meal =( They need to hire more people, but I guess it's one of the kinks they need to smoothen out with a bit more time. I got home very thirsty though, probably the msg or just because there was so much salt in our broth. Next time, I'm gonna try their original broth, see if the same thing happens. --although next time will probably be a long time from now. Feeling a bit (ok, maybe a lot) guilty for eating AYCE two nights in a row. Goodbye October!

Munchie Adventure: Top Gun Hot Pot 尖東火鍋, Burnaby

Was gonna go to Fright Night at Playland, but we worried about the rain, and I saw the lineups at work, so decided to go eat instead =D Oh so typical of me eh? We were planning on going to Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot, since it just opened, but it was SO FULL, we didn't want to wait for an hour for a spot xD

First things first, the lady who seated us, was very friendly and nice, but the rest of the waitresses? CRAP. Seriously, they were so rude! I can't believe it. If I don't have to, I won't be back. Unless they get better customer service. Thinking about it makes me angry again ==; And I usually let things slide, but when MOST of them are like that... I think, "Seriously?"

Anyways, didn't want that to ruin our night, so we just laughed it off. When we got there, we ordered the Mixed (Yin-yang) Pot ($9.50)-- it's like you pay $1.00 for a separation plate =P Got the Spicy Szhechuan and Chicken Broth.

We ordered a lot of stuff, and I only had time to snap a few pics. Stuff was fresh, but orders didn't follow what we ordered. *sad* I guess no place really does. The meat was too thick to just swirl around with your chopsticks, so we ended up dumping them in all at once, which RUINS THE PURPOSE OF HOTPOT, only IMO of course =)

The balls were good, fresh made and not too flour-y. I liked the shrimp and squid balls the best =)

Seafood platter, we wanted OYSTERS!!! It's not limited, so we ordered quite a few, and they were fresh and big. Not cleaned well though, so it was rather slimey... probably right out of the container. ><" Shrimp were fresh too, but I don't like shells at hot pot, food is so hot, then I get my hands dirty ^^" And look at how much squid there is! We only ordered ONE T-T

They are known for their sauces though, and I like it too, however, nothing too special about it. I can make it at home, just too lazy to buy so many kinds. Mainly they have Satay, Seasame, Bean sauce, and Soy sauce, plus onions, parsley, red peppers, and garlic. However, even with the discount, it was $30 per person!! Crazy. Won't be back.... willingly anyways ==; Did I mention they gave us a tiny table for 7?? Others only had about 4 or less people in these spots. We crammed 7 in there. BEAUTIFUL.

A Few Thoughts: 離開後,別說祝我幸福,你有什麼資格祝我幸福...

離開後,別說祝我幸福,你有什麼資格祝我幸福...
想你的時候有些幸福,幸福得有些難過。
After leaving, don't say you wish me happiness, what gives you the right to wish me happiness...
Happiness is when I think about you, but now there's sadness in this happiness.

那麼,從離開的時候,你還有什麼資格祝我幸福?
Some people never understand, leaving is the greatest hurt.
So, ever since you left, what right do you have to wish me happiness?

離開那一刻,你選擇放棄,我為你,你再不值得。
你扭頭,我沒必要等在原地。笑著哭也要幸福。
轉身比你快,走開,再不回來
The moment you left, you chose to give up. For you, I knew it wasn't worth it anymore.
You shook your head, I had no need to wait for you. Even if I'm smiling while crying, I will find happiness.
I'll turn away faster than you, leave, and never return.

Mini Munchie: The Coffee Bun Bakery & Cafe, Coquitlam

Having been disappointed the last time I came here, since they had run out of the item I wanted, I came back again to try my luck! So happy they weren't sold out today!

The inside always smells soo good!! I love their sweet freshly-baked bun smell =D The store was pretty full when I walked in, so I was worried for a moment that they had run out of Ice Cream Bun ($2.85) again! Luckily they still had them today =) Well, considering it's lightly raining and freezing cold, I guess it wasn't as popular of a choice. We had a wait a while before we were served though, even though there was no line up =(

I got two (which ended to be $6.00 with tax), to share with the family, but I noticed their bun seemed to be flatter than the other location. When I got it, I felt they were missing something already. I was kind of disappointed when I bit into it, the bun wasn't very fresh =( It gave me a slight oily feel, and the cold bun wasn't the same texture as I remembered it to be (not as chewy). Guess I do have to travel all the way to North Van for a yummy Ice Cream Bun =( Their coffee is fair trade though! Maybe I'll try it someday! They have a bun + drink special for around $5 with tax!

Munchie Adventure: Boston Pizza, Coquitlam

$5 coupon off of a $25 or more ^-^ (We ended up eating way over that of course haha) Came here with the family, and possibly because it was a Tuesday, so it was pretty empty when we entered. Didn't know it was Pasta Tuesday, so all their pastas were $10.99 =D

They didn't notice at first when we walked in, but after about 1 minute she saw us, and quickly seated us. Personally, I don't like my server staring at me eat, so having her check on us about four times for our whole visit was nice (instead of the normal "How's everything?" every 10 minutes).

Of course, we gotta get the pasta! My brother, likes to choose from the pictures, so we got a Baked Chipotle Bacon Penne ($10.99, normally $15.50). Sounded good in the description-- cuz there was BACON =D Looked really good when it arrived too, full of cheese on top and nicely browned. However, the sauce was mediocre. It felt slimy =/ Like that gooey feel you get when eating okra (if you know what that is. . . )

And we also tried their Jambalaya Fettuccine ($10.99, normally $18.75). It's listed as spicy, but I found it was only the spicy italian sausage that was spicy, the rest was fine =) This was too salty for my liking, but maybe it's because of the tomato sauce's tangy nature. Sauce and pasta didn't work well together, as I had some pasta with no sauce, since it didn't "stick" at all, so it was a tasteless mouthful. Display was nice though, full of shrimp, but the chicken breast were in tiny chunks that were barely present.

And the last item!! We finally got to try their pizza, which they are so famous for! (I've come here before, but never thought of getting pizza haha) We looked at their menu, and decided on a large (15") Boston Royal ($29.95). The pizza came on a stand, looking all high and mighty =P The crust was really crispy and the ingredients were good quality. A bit on the burnt side for the onions, but that was fine, just too them off and the rest was good. Family really liked it cuz it wasn't salty, like many of the other pizza places. However, I'm not sure if it's worthy of $30 . . .

I know Western food is more expensive than our average meal, so even with out $5 coupon, it was over what I would want to pay for lunch. Not for this quality at least. I might be back, but there's other restaurants in the nearby area with similar food, so maybe I'll give those a try first =P

Munchie Adventure: Cattle Cafe 牛仔餐廳 (Circle Square), Vancouver

I noticed this location was a lot closer to my work, so we decided to come here after work! After some GPS misleadings, we finally found our way here! =) And hey, now I've tried them all-- until they open another location! =P

Before we walked in, I noticed the Halloween decorations, which were quite cute =) As we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly waitress (quite cute too =P) and seated by a corner spot. It was pretty full inside for 9:30pm, I guess it's because it's Vancouver?

Alright, I was FAMISHED, so I got overly excited while ordering. You know what results afterwards... wayy to much food =P But anyways, we ordered the "Noodle Combo of Your Choice" ($8.50), with the Malay Laksa soup base, pork bung and fried fish cakes for the toppings with rice noodles. The soup was extra spicy, which isn't what we were used to, but SO GOOD. I mixed it with the white soup base of the fish noodles, and it was perfect :)

With this, we could order two side dishes on top. I saw Takoyaki ($1.95), and of course I can't pass that up =P Too bad there's only three =( They were really fresh and good though, however the sauce was too sweet. I like it a bit more tangy.

The other thing we got was the pork cutlet ($1.75), and it was a BIG piece of pork cutlet! Very crispy, pork was a bit dry though. Tasty! Would've LOVED some sauce on it =)

This also came with a drink, ordered Lemon in hot water. Healthy choice I guess? xD

Then we ordered Hand Squeezed Fish Noodle and Mixed Mushrooms in Soup ($6.95). It was the thick chewy yummy kind!!! =D I was verrry happy ^-^

My pick was the House Special Baked Seafood and Pork Chop with Fried Rice ($9.95). I know right? More pork chop. It didn't click until it arrived haha. Anyways, I looked at the pork chop side and was started to count the pieces, there were like 3-4 pieces *only*. NOPE. It was a WHOLE piece, just put in two layers!! Wow. So much pork chop for me =P So there was less rice on the side with the pork chop, but I wasn't complaining. Sauce to rice ratio was good, so the rice wasn't too saucey nor dry =)

Came with a drink, but I got the Lemon Ribena (add $1.00), surprise surprise? Ice cubes again, but still good. There was a lot of ice though, too much for my liking.

I was happy with my meal, except for when we were trying to get the bill, took a bit longer than anticipated. Noticed there was only one waitress, so pardon was given =)

Munchie Adventure: Sushi K Kamizato, Port Coquitlam

Guess who just got accepted into Nursing Schoolll?? =D *waves hands around and jumps up and down* --AHEM-- please excuse me, just too excited and happy =) Annyways, family treated me out to lunch as a celebratory meal! ^-^ I got to choose, and this place had pretty good reviews, so I decided to try it, since it was so close. Pretty hidden in the corner though...

It took us a while to find the restaurant, and as we were about to give up, my brother spotted it. We walked in, it's a little store, one waitress (owner?), one chef (husband?) at the sushi bar, and two guys popping in and out of the kitchen. There was one table of people, we were seated by the only other 4-person table at the small store. I looked at the menu, and lets just say their prices aren't average for the area. It's pretty pricey, but I decided to give it a try anyways!

We were started off with some Seafood Tempura (on the house), and they were good! I think it was all salmon tempura, and the dipping sauce went really well with it. Not oily feeling at all, and the batter wasn't thick and overpowering! =)

Not knowing what to order, we decided on their Lunch sets (forgot the name and their website is down ><), which came with sunomono, rice, and miso soupThe sunomono had plenty of shrimp, which I really liked. The vermicelli was hard though, and vinegar was too strong. No picture of the rice, but it was well made, very chewy!! =D

Here's the miso soup, which I found a bit redundant because the udon was miso-based, and tasted exactly the same, but with udon =/ (It was ok for the other set we got though)

We got the Daily Special ($8.95), which was Udon in Miso Soup topped with Salmon. I thought the salmon was chicken breast for a while, since it was such a white color! Udon was nice and chewy, but this is something I can make at home easily, so I don't wanna order it again =/

The second Lunch set we got was the Sushi, Sashimi, and Roll ($14.95). Although I personally prefer the cheaper orangey (farmed?) salmon, getting wild salmon is a nice surprise, since it's usually more expensive. There was five pieces of sashimi (salmon, 2 tuna, 2 hokkigai), three pieces of sushi (salmon, ebi, tuna), and one california roll. The sashimi looked fresh, but I found the tuna a bit mushier and fishier than I'd like, maybe it wasn't as fresh as it could've been. Sushi had small pieces of rice, which I liked, the rice wasn't the only thing I could taste in my bite! Good proportion with the item on top =) California Roll had pink crab! Not the norm, and it was a bit saltier than normal too, which I didn't like. Liked the small size, but you know parents, when they shrink size and price isn't proportionately shrunk, they dislike =P

For rolls, we tried their infamous Ocean Wiser ($9.50). I watched him make it, and it was well executed. Very precise and so much passion he puts into his creations. I don't like amaebi alone, but in this roll, it was good! Although my first piece came apart (because of the sauce, the rice wasn't sticky enough), I loved the explosion of flavor in my mouth. The roll took very little effort to chew, just melted away almost!

Out of ideas, the owner walked over with the specials board for us to look at!

Poco Gunner ($8.95) caught our eye, and we ordered it. We all agreed it was too burnt, it was overwhelming the flavors of the roll itself =( There was shrimp tempura in the middle topped with shiitaki mushroom and seared inari.

Still a bit hungry, and since it was celebratory... we ordered two Tiger's Eye ($3.75 EACH). I saw this online, and thought it looked really good. I watched him mix the scallops, so I knew they were fresh (fresly mixed anyways =P). Rice wrapped by lightly seared salmon topped with chopped scallops-- it was really good. But the scallops were a bit frozen. Rice had a little bit of sauce on them, and it was really tasty. Like the posts said online, this does kind of melt in your mouth, requires some chewing =P These are one of those try-it-once-but-not-again things, since I could get a whole dim sum plate for this price =P Student budget! haha

Family agreed we're just not into this kind of food, or not at this level. They didn't have my favorite Tako Yakis either, so that's a minus point =P For the money we paid, I'm pretty sure we could get a lot more food at other Japanese restaurants in the area =/

Recipe: Cream Puffs

It's been a while since I've put up a recipe! Here's a simple cream puffs recipe =)

Ingredients:
25mL margarine/ butter
50mL water
50mL flour
1        egg

Some useful utensils:

  • non-stick saucepan/ pot
  • wooden spatula
  • measuring spoons
  • measuring cup
  • electric mixer
  • large bowl (which can hold minimum of 1L of fluids to be safe)
  • two small spoons (for scooping the batter onto the baking sheet)
  • baking sheet
  • (optional) parchment paper

Method:
1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
2. Combine margarine and water in a small saucepan (I like to use my non-stick pot).
3. Stir over heat just until margarine has melted and mixture boils (slightly, not strongly)
4. Add flour all at once, stir vigorously over heat until mixture leaves sides of saucepan.
You can see how it left easily! I roll it around for fun =P
5. Transfer mixture to a bowl and add egg.
6. Beat with electric mixer until fluffy.
It shouldn't be watery, and should be well mixed by now.
7. Drop heaping 5mL portions about 5 cm apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
**You can choose to line this with parchment paper first =)**
8. Bake for 10 minutes at 400°F, then reduce heat to 350°F and bake another 10 minutes
or until crispy and slightly browned.
**DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN DURING BAKING**
Voila~ Cool shells before filling with whipping cream or custard, then finish by
drizzling with melted chocolate.
