Dragon Group: Amazing tea, sub-par dim sum

Family was in Richmond visiting the temple, so we thought to have lunch in the area before leaving! Saw this new place have their "Grand Opening" sign up, so we decided to give it a try, it used to be the location of South Ocean.

There wasn't a long wait in line for tables although it looked crowded, we were seated after about 15 minutes of waiting. The inside is quite nicely furnished now, but still the same small space. There is a $1/person charge, and the tea quality justifies this surcharge, it was very nice tea-- fragrant and light.

I was looking through the menu while we waited, so we could place the order right as we sat down (hungry peeps). First to arrive was the Halibut with Scallions and Ginger in Premium Soy Sauce ($8.25). The halibut was cooked perfectly, juicy and flakey inside with a crispy exterior that was evenly coated with the soy sauce. Not overly seasoned, I quite enjoyed the piping hot fish. Wish there were more pieces considering the price we paid.

My mom really loves Rice Roll Wrapped with Donut ($5.25), but this was an utter disappointment. The rice roll itself was mediocre, chewy but not quite "smooth". The Chinese donut was hard as a rock and over-fried. Normally it should be crispy on the outside with a bread-like interior. At least they put the soy sauce on the side.

When I first went for dim sum in Hong Kong, one thing I really enjoyed were their "combo" dishes-- basically dishes with more than one item in it, so you could have dim sum alone AND still have variety. I saw the Beef Ball, Spare rib, Chicken Feet combo ($4.75) and was sold immediately. Sadly, this wasn't quite up to standard. The chicken foot was nice, and the beef ball was a good size and average texture/taste. The spareribs were actually seasoned nicely but more than half of it was tiny bits of meat with chunks of fat. There was ONE piece with bone in it (I like the ones with bone). So basically this was one super oily dish.

Annnnd for my Elephant, Deep Fried Sesame Ball with Seasame paste ($4.75). This wasn't freshly made to order, but was still relatively warm. Crispy outside but the dough inside wasn't chewy enough. The sesame paste was too gritty and sweet that it didn't flow nicely.

Being a lover of anything Tom Yum, I ordered Beef Omasum in Tom Yum Sauce ($5.50). It was like any other omasum dish, but I like their concept of putting in Tom Yum. I'd say it's a rather personal taste, since I enjoyed this dish, but my mom said it was weird.

Didn't settle for regular shrimp dumplings, so we got Meat Rissoles with Crab ($5.75). Fancy sounding enough (it has this even fancier sounding name in Chinese). Probably the most disappointing dish of the whole meal, possibly my whole dim sum eating life. The wrapping was soft and soggy, fell apart when touched, not chewy at all. The filling did indeed contain real crab, but it also did not hold and so... the dish just all fell apart before it reached any bowl. Similar to any good sushi, your dumpling is not meant to break apart before it reaches your bowl, the wrapping should be strong enough to hold it, yet still be soft, smooth, and chewy.

Another combo dish, Steamed Tri-Buns ($4.75) should contain a custard bun, a BBQ pork bun, and a chicken bun. I say "should" because I got double of the BBQ pork bun *sadface* I asked a waiter to confirm I wasn't being stupid and not able to differentiate the two remaining buns (custard is round and easily distinguishable from the other two). These were good, the custard bun had flowy filling, as advertised and tasted pretty legit. The buns themselves were good texture and taste. I just wish I had a taste of that chicken bun now.

Something with a fusion twist to it, since I don't think truffle is commonly in Chinese dishes, the Pork Shiu-Mai with Truffle ($5.50) arrived. These looked normal, with some truffle sauce on top. I did not like the taste of the truffle, it was slimey and tasted like concentrated Chinese mushrooms. The shiu mai itself was made with ground pork and had good bite to it. Average size.

Lamb isn't commonly in dim sum, and I'm a sucker for lamb so...Pan Fried Lamb Pastry with Leeks ($6.25) was ordered. These buns were not worthy of the price we paid. Pan fried to a golden exterior with the bun being soft and moist, and the filling being all lamb, I liked the flavors. However, there were only three small buns. THREE.

Still hungry, we ordered a Wonton Noodle Soup ($7.80/bowl) expecting the usual wontons, but were surprised when they showed up more like pork and chive dumplings with no shrimp. The meat wasn't very fresh inside the dumplings, the wrapping was chewy and smooth though. Noodles weren't anything special, but I like the added touch of greens.

I saw the Pan Fried Tofu with Shrimp Paste ($5.25) come out of the kitchen a few times and they were huge! Must order. The tofu was a big chunk with shrimp paste on top. Nicely fried, it was crispy and I like how they placed the sauce on the side. Shrimp paste met the average standards.

Normally we don't eat a lot, but boy was I surprised when I saw our bill was $124.74!! Then I looked to see that they had charged us 55 people's worth of tea-- no wonder! Luckily I caught it, and they changed it.

But still, paying more than $10/person for dim sum is a rarity for my family, so this was a surprise, but hey, being adventurous means you have to suffer the consequences too! =P Overall, good service, high quality tea, hit or mostly miss dim sum.

Pepper Lunch: Simple meat, rice, sizzle-- but salty.

After a whole afternoon of AYCS (all-you-can-sing), we were famished! We found our way over to Pepper Lunch as I've been super excited to try it and TheVoice approved.

TheVoice recommended Kobe Beef Burger and Sliced Angus Steak ($12.95), and Adorables ordered it (and didn't take a picture, shame on him). It was actually quite a good portion, the beef burger was moist and full of umami. The sliced Angus steak was similarly tender and juicy, went super well with the rice.

I got their Pork Pepper Rice ($8.50) and combo'd it up to get miso soup and pop for $2.75. The pork was raw and cooking, when i flipped it over, it was a nice golden color. Sizzle sizzle! Deliciously juicy, but I added extra garlic sauce (came in a bottle) which was a bad idea. The whole thing became too salty =/ It came with rice in the middle, corn, some beige paste, and pepper. Tasty where I didn't over sauce =P It was big enough that I couldn't finish it myself.

I would say it's good food for the price, with some fun to it. They come really quickly too, so the longest part was waiting for a table! TheVoice said that the crazy expensive dishes aren't worth it though, heard something similar from another friend too, so I would say, stick to the basics! It's solid. Sizzle on!

Steveston Seafood House: Everyone's here with a coupon!

Had a coupon to this place and was super stoked to try with my partner in crime!

We were seated in a little corner alcove, which I liked since we could see the rest of the restaurant and sit on a curved bench (as opposed to chairs). Stared at the menu for a while, then realized we were getting a prix fixe menu (LivingSocial coupon $69), so no need to think! We were started with Coconut Prawn and Scallops. There were four of them on spoons, quite a nice presentation. I couldn't physically see the scallops nor taste them, but they must be in there, right? The prawns were nicely cooked and the coconut sauce was fragrant and creamy. A little on the sweet side, but nice to start with.

The second starter was their Beef Carpaccio. A surprisingly large plate, the beef was thinly sliced and covered with balsamic reduction, some sort of hard cheese (aged cheddar?!), sweet onions, and capers. The beef fell apart and stuck to the plate, but after being scraped off and placed on the toasted bread-- delicious! Meaty flavors went well with the tart flavors of the balsamic and capers then the cheese made it creamy and a bit salty. Wonderful party in my mouth. The arugula salad was overwhelmingly saucy though =(

We were then both served a Salad of Mixed Greens. I love lemons, so when I saw lemon on the plate, I automatically squeezed all the juices onto the salad. Bad move. It became far too tart. Anyhow, there was sauce already mixed in, with a slice of tomato and some onions on top. Not a bad size to get some veggies into the meal! Some parts weren't that fresh (the tips were oxidized) but aside from my own mistake, the salad was decent.

Onto our mains, we both were served a Cedar Plank Salmon. The wood was warm and the plating was beautiful. Although all night it felt like every dish had balsamic reduction in it-- as if there is no other seasoning. Or maybe it's the theme of their courses? The salmon was perfectly cooked, juicy and melted in my mouth. I believe its sockeye salmon. Regretfully they over-seasoned the fish with too much salt on top, but after scraping it off, we continued enjoying the wonderful main. Veggies were a little overcooked, so they were too soft and the asparagus was not tender. The rice was scrumptious. It was creamy and al dente, reminded me of Hainan chicken rice-- yummy!

Finally we were served dessert :  Tiramisu. I saw another table be served dessert and was worried it would be disappointing, since theirs looked like a tiny triangle of tiramisu about to fall over. Luckily ours turned out to be quite nice. The cream part was rich and smooth-- I could taste the mascarpone distinctly. The cake however, was really moist and bland (as you can see from the water leaking out on the plate). Otherwise, a decent tiramisu =)

First time in my life seeing a tip of 100%, and first time for Adorables to tip that too! Their service was lovely and attentive, I enjoyed our meal. Almost everyone around us had a coupon for their meal too, wonder if they are able to profit at all?! (picture is of original price)

BBT Shop: And we have a winner!

Been hearing about this new bubble tea place and Adorables won their door prize of 10 free bubble teas, so why not drop by for free food (Thanks Adorables) =D

I couldn't decide what drink to get, so opted for a Triple Decker Bubble Waffle ($6.25) instead. They said we could use the free bubble tea card like a gift card, so this was "on the house" aka on Adorables ^-^ The bubble waffle was crispy on the outside, chewy and moist on the inside! Also not overly sweet, it went well with the banana, strawberries, Nutella, and whipped cream. Yum!

First, they put in a lot of effort making the presentation beautiful. I love the care they put in. Secondly, the bubble waffles and other ingredients were very fresh and tasty. Finally, the interior was clean and open. I like the Rubik's cubes they put on every table! Gives you something to do, and if you solve one, you get a free drink! Can't wait to try other items on their menu =)

Mega Sushi: Second dinner did not disappoint!

Still had some room in our tummies, and wanting to make the most of this trip to Steveston, we went to the other end of Steveston and got more food!

Ordered a Salmon Sashimi ($7.95) which was wild salmon. Quite happy with the quantity and quality. Salmon was fresh (I think I need a synonym, fresh is getting . . . old xD).
I liked the sprig of celery on top hehe

One order of the Prawn Tempura ($7.95) was rather satisfying. It came in a cute dim sum container, which kept the tempura crispy. They were nicely sized and the batter was light and crunchy.

Chicken Teriyaki ($10.50) came on an iron plate, but I don't recall it being too sizzly. Kinda disappointing. Otherwise, chicken portion was good with lots of bean sprouts under it and rice.

Got a couple nigiris: Salmon ($2.25 each), Tobiko ($2.25 each), Chopped Scallop ($2.25 each) and Tuna ($1.75 each). All were well-proportioned and fresh. I felt that there was too much mayo for the chopped scallop but the tobiko instead of masago was a nice touch ;)

Mango Roll ($8.95) had sweet mango on it with crispy prawn tempura. They added some mango sauce to it to make it more mango-y I guess ^^" Plating was pretty and the flavors went well together as the sweet/tart of the mango cut the oily feeling of tempura.

I ordered a Rainbow Roll ($11.95) before and it was just as pleasing this time. They top it with 5 kinds of fish I believe and didn't fall apart. Very happy. Fish was fresh and delicious.

Salmon Combo ($12.95) was a lot of salmon. I'd have to say there's nothing super special about this because it was just salmon sashimi, salmon sushi, and salmon maki. That's it. Simply for a salmon-lover.

We got a Beef Udon ($9.25) to finish off our meal. The udon was chewy and plentiful. Soup was rich and the beef was tender.
They even gave us little "tubs" to share with ^-^

Everyone was uber satisfied with our second dinner, and with our bellies full, we left Steveston with happy memories.

Fishermen Sushi: I'm back already!

Brought our Hong Kong visitors to Steveston for a feel of how fishermens' harbors were like and ended up for more food after our quick tour!

I lured them here with cheap, fresh Oysters aka kaki pon ($0.75 each). Ordered a first conservative round of two dozen and they were slurped up quickly. Fresh and flavorful, they smoothly made their way into my digestive tract.

Felt weird not ordering anything else, and my daddy dearest doesn't eat raw much, so we got an Agedashi Tofu ($4.75). It was very fresh and crispy.

As well, we got Takoyaki ($4.95). These were creamy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Lovely.

Got another round of oysters . . .

. . . And quickly gobbled them up too!

The waiters were super efficient and nice even though we only ordered their special oysters mainly-- which was great. I hate places that treat you poorly because you're not "ordering enough". Props to them! =)

Neptune Seafood: Lobster for lunch? SURE

Bringing some relatives around to visit Richmond, they wanted to try some "Vancouver dim sum". Haven't been here before, but dinner was pretty good when I came here once, so why not?

So as I walked in I smelled delicious durian and wanted to order the item containing it-- sadly... I saw them plate out a few but none ever reached our table until they told us when I asked again, "They're sold out." WHAT. WHY YOU NO TELL ME EARLIER. I'M SURE I ORDERED IT FIRST. Anyways. aside from that, first was a nicely sized Pork Shao Mai ($5.68). The pork was chopped and not pureed, which everyone enjoyed. Tasted legit and fresh.

Next Pig Liver Rice Rolls ($5.68) were very mediocre. Sure the liver was a nice crunchy consistency and flavored well, but the rice roll around it was a bit hard, rough, and not chewy enough.

Steamed Beef Tripe ($4.68) was nicely portioned and flavored well. The tripe was crunchy and goodMeets the standards.

Then the Shrimp Dumplings ($5.68) were disappointing. The filling was crunchy, springy, and fresh but the wrapping fell apart and was too soft.

I was surprised at how many BBQ Pork Buns ($4.68) were in one order! For the price, there were four big buns which were decent! Soft bread and the pork inside had a good consistency. Flavors were up to par.

I find their Lotus Leaf Sticky Rice ($5.68) quite ingenious because they wrap it on the outside with an extra layer of paper, keeping in all the lotus flavors-- creating rice that was infused with lotus. Delicious. The ingredients inside were not bad either, pork, egg, and a piece of Chinese sausage. Quite traditional.

I didn't try their Stuffed Eggplant ($5.68) as I'm allergic, but they looked big and fresh. Everyone seemed to enjoy them.

The Deep Fried Stuffed Dumplings ($5.68) had barely any filling. Freshly made but nothing special.

Now comes the lobster. I find it quite a good deal for a lobster with noodles at lunch. Their Fried Lobster Rice Noodles ($19.98) had a full lobster on top of a bed of clear rice noodles. Flavors were soy sauce based with some ginger and green onion. Lobster was fresh. Highlight of the meal for sure. Definitely impressed our visitors from Hong Kong ^u^

Onto dessert, we had Deep Fried Glutinous Balls ($4.68).
The filling is a sweet custard that everyone enjoyed because it flowed nicely out and was freshly made.

I think it was in season or something, and I was against it in the beginning, but we ordered a Red Bean Rice Cake ($4.68) aka red bean sticky rice. It was TINY. Texture was ok, it was chewy and not too soft nor was it hard. I found it mediocre compared to the ones we used to get from this nice old lady xD Anyhow, not worth ordering again. (didn't get a pic cuz it was THAT disappointing)

As you might notice, tea ($1.20/person) was rather expensive =( It was like having one and a half dim sum dishes :c Oh well. Service was not bad, very variable.
